CHASING WINDMILLS and DREAMS

  

    Chasing windmills is not common. Some might even call it crazy, but Don Quixote, the lead character in Man of La Mancha finds this is a part of his escape from his imprisonment during the Spanish Inquisition.  Don Quixote’s story comes alive in this year’s fall Royal Crown Players production of the classic musical, opening on November 18th and running through November 20th

at Roslyn High School.

 

Man of La Mancha is set in Spain at the end of the 16th century. Miguel de Cervantes, an author, is thrown into prison by the Spanish Inquisition and forced to plead for his life and the life of his servant when put on trial by the other prisoners. In his defense, Cervantes tells the tale of Alonso Quijana, who believes he is the knight-errant Don Quixote de la Mancha. Cervantes and his servant assume the roles of Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza as the other prisoners reluctantly participate in the tale. Eventually they are drawn into the story in spite of themselves and realize the power of pursuing one’s dreams. Through his trials and tribulations, Don Quixote reveals how love, truth, honor and justice can all be possible in life.

 

The musical features several well known tunes, including “The Impossible Dream,” and hosts a cast of unforgettable characters, including Don Quixote performed by Brian Rosenblum along with the entwined roles of Miguel Cervantes and Alonso Quijana; the faithful Sancho performed by Max Aboody; Sara Tazari makes her RCP debut as Aldonza (who does not believe she is worthy of Quixote’s love) ; Quixote’s nemesis, the cruel Dr. Carrasco (who strives to disenchant Quixote of his madness) portrayed by Lee Taglin; and a full crew of prisoners-turned-muleteers to bring forth this dark yet strangely uplifting tale including Andrew Werner as the Padre,  Emily Hauser as Antonia, Christina Combs as the Housekeeper, Spencer Levy as the Governor and Alex Goldklang as the Barber.  Also featured in the cast are David Taub as Pedro (the head muleteer), Andrew Catalano as Anselmo, Lisa Goldberg as Maria (the innkeeper’s wife), and Robin Zelman as Fermina the Moorish Dancer.  Others in the cast include Alex Cohen (onstage guitarist/muleteer) along with muleteers Doug Ruchefsky, Danny Buslik, Adam Rubin, Justin Corinella, and Tom Roccotagliata.  Other prisoners are Alexis Shaw, Sami Cherif, Sasha Hiller, Michel Aron-Bayof, Tracy Naviasky, Abbe Goldberg, Melissa Lefcort, Sam Azoulay and Elyssa Ackerman.  Mr. Wilfredo Abrahante, a high school faculty member, joins the cast in a cameo role as the Captain of the Inquisition.

Man of La Mancha is an uplifting story for our time. Don Quixote portrays the importance of not seeing life as it is but seeing life as it ought to be. It exemplifies the importance of lofty goals and aspirations that seem out of our grasp. Written by Dale Wasserman, Milton Leigh and Joe Darion, Man of La Mancha was the 1966 winner of the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Musical.  

 

“The challenging aspect of the role of Don Quixote is accentuated because it encompasses two other roles: Don Miguel de Cervantes and Alsonso Quijana,” Rosenblum said. “The show switches between these three characters.”

 

The musical and stage direction is by RCP veteran Brad Frey.  Choreography is by Jennifer Buonomo and costumes are by Joseph Hoffman.  Set design and construction is by Ron Weaver and the new assistant advisor of the club is Paulina Schwartz.  The stage manager is Emily Niesenbaum with Emily Zahn as her assistant.  Set decoration is headed by Marie Inui.  The business managers are Michael Hofer and Jessica Cohen with Alex Cohen and Monique Yashaya as assistants. Eric Feinstein is the set construction crew chief along with Matt Ronas. Andrew Imperato heads the lighting and tech crew. The sound design is by Doug Rowand with sound chief, Eric Lippe assisted by Keri Murtagh.

Man of La Mancha will be performed on Thursday, November 18th at 3:30 PM; Friday, November 19th at 7:30 PM; and Saturday, November 20th at 7:30 PM.  All performances take place in the Roslyn High School Auditorium.
