PRESS RELEASE
RCP’S AIDA SHOWS IT’S STRONGEST SUIT
The Royal Crown Players of Roslyn High School will be presenting Elton John and Tim Rice’s smash hit, Tony Award winning musical AIDA on November 17th through the 19th at Roslyn High School’s auditorium. Aida is the intimate, epic, and timeless tale of love in ancient Egypt. This musical is not to be missed. The production is elaborate and the performers are Broadway caliber.
AIDA is bursting with contemporary energy that tells of the love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess stolen from her country; Amneris, an Egyptian princess; and Radames, the soldier they both love. Based on the opera by Giuseppe Verdi, AIDA is an epic and classic tale of love, loyalty, betrayal, and courage, with an exhilarating Tony® and Grammy®Award-winning score by Elton John and Tim Rice, their first collaboration since writing the music and lyrics for The Lion King together.
AIDA is the latest in a recent string of Broadway musicals based on classic 19th century operas that also includes Miss Saigon (based on Puccini’s Madame Butterfly) and Rent (based on La Boheme, also by Puccini). Though still set in ancient Egypt, this new production of AIDA has been significantly updated and is infused with the energy of Elton John’s unique brand of late 20th century pop music. Sir Elton’s famous friendships and lifestyle even influence the story, with a character reportedly based on Princess Diana, and an entire number dedicated to high fashion (“My Strongest Suit”), including breathtaking costumes designed by Gordon Leary. Mr. Leary joins the creative team from the graduate school at Tisch’s NYU musical theater school.
“I have been involved with so many fine RCP productions, but this one is truly special. Not since Les Misérables in 2003 have we ventured to stage such a popular and difficult musical. I encourage the community to witness first hand the talents of these wonderful students,” says Aida’s director Brad Frey. “The team of Tim Rice and Elton John teaming up together with one of the most passionate love stories ever written is a director’s dream,” Mr. Frey adds.
Aida will be played by Sara Tazari. Lee Taglin will play the conflicted Egyptian captain Radames. The role of the heartbreaking princess Amneris will be performed by Amanda Shechtman. Spencer Levy portrays the evil minister Zoser, father of Radames, who employs sinister techniques to gain the Pharaoh’s throne for his son. Max Aboody plays the wily Nubian slave Mereb, who befriends Aida and assists her captured father, Amonasro, the King of the Nubians, is played by David Taub. Doug Ruchefsky will portray the Pharaoh and Elyssa Ackerman will play the featured Nubian slave Nehebka.
The multi-talented ensemble consists of the featured Palace Women played by Sami Cheirif, Alison Farber, Lizzie Greenwald, Sammi Azoulay, Emily Hauser, Allie Kornstein, Tracy Naviasky, Joselyn Lagow and Alexis Shaw. The Ministers and Soldiers are Justin Corinella, Tom Eyerman, Alex Goldklang, Tom Roccotagliata, Devin Rossinsky, Adam Rubin, David Taub and Adam Wagner. The Nubian Slaves are played by Danny Buslik, David Taub, Abbe Goldberg, Melissa Lefcort, Eric Greengold, Mallory Levy, Adam Rubin, Sammi Azoulay, Arjun Khanna, Hartley Abdekalimi, Meredith Shapiro, Amanda Czik, Trisha Nussbaum, Amanda Bralower, Rachel Korsen, Tracy Naviasky and Jennifer Feldman.
Mr. Frey heads the creative team which includes stunning choreography by Ashley Gur and imaginative costumes are by Mr. Leary, both of whom have joined the RCP team this semester. Set design and construction is by RCP veteran Ron Weaver and the producer is by newcomer Mardi Braun. The stage manager is Emily Zahn with Melanie Beatus as her assistant. Set decoration is headed by Erika Kolb. Stephanie Lestz is the costume chief. The business manager is Michael Hofer. Madye Berger is the set construction crew chief and Andrew Imperato heads the lighting and tech crew. The sound design is by Doug Rowand with sound chief, Keri Murtagh.
Aida will be performed on Thursday, November 17th at 3:30 PM; Friday, November 18th at 7:30 PM; and two shows on Saturday, November 19th at 2:00 and 7:30 PM. All performances take place in the Roslyn High School Auditorium.
